Kardinia eNews - Wednesday 30 October 2024

From the Principal

A very brief eNews article from me today.

With our IB exams nearing completion and our VCE exams starting this week, I just want to wish all the absolute best to our Year 12 students and their families.

I also want to give a massive shout out to Year 12 Co-ordinators (IB, VCE and Heads of House) and all our incredible Year 12 teachers for being so supportive and encouraging to our Year 12 students throughout the year.

From the Head of Senior School

We commenced this week with our Year 10 Leadership Program, where all of our Year 10 students participated in a program designed to enhance their understanding of leadership and their opportunities and responsibilities as they progress through the College. The feedback from Heads of House was excellent, who noted that the students participated enthusiastically and were willing to offer opinions and volunteer for different activities. The program concluded with a pizza lunch on the lawn below Centrepoint, which was very much enjoyed by all.

Year 12 IB exams continue and Year 12 VCE have now commenced. The Class of 2024 continues to impress us with their focus, determination and support of each other during this period.

We have been celebrating Diwali throughout the week, with members of the International Council organising and running activities throughout the week. The lunchtime activities have been very well attended and it’s wonderful to see so many members of our community embracing this celebration.

Finally, a reminder that classes run as usual on Monday, but that Tuesday 5 November is the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday and that the College will be closed, with the exception of some IB exams.

From the Head of Junior School

Cyber Safety Workshop
A final reminder that the Cyber Safety Workshop for Junior School parents and Y3-Y6 students is on tonight from 6.00pm. This workshop brings students and their parents together to ignite important conversations about cyber security, safety and digital wellbeing at home. Parents and guardians will walk away with tools, strategies and resources to help their young people thrive and stay safe in a hyper-connected digital world. Students will gain confidence in conversing with their trusted adults about their online experiences.

Thanks to the many parents, family members, and staff, including Scott Russell and Mitch Hough, for their support and assistance. Congratulations to Morongo for winning the event.

Let’s reduce our waste and be more sustainable!

After learning about waste in the Year 4 STP unit, two Year 4 girls wanted to encourage the school community to be more sustainable. Next week, please bring in any unwanted, clean clothes that are in good condition and/or any unwanted books in good condition. You can place them in the tubs around LP and UP. On Friday 8 November you can come to the Conference Room at lunch and choose new items. For every item you bring in, you can choose another item. This is based on an honesty system, please be honest! Let’s work together to reduce our waste!

From the JS Action Committee.

A Note from the Social Justice Committee

Time to do a spring clean out of your wardrobe?

The Social Justice Committee are doing a collection of clothing, particularly children’s clothing to support Geelong families in need. The clothing must be in good condition and clean. Toiletries are also welcome.

The collection point is now STUDENT SERVICES, and all donations should be in a plastic bag, ready to be stored until the end of the project.

So off to your wardrobe and see what’s there, it’s good therapy.

Then and Now - Experiencing Artworks

The current generation of Kardinia students is engaging with cutting-edge technology in their art classes.

The images below highlight a striking contrast: a group of senior students in 2005 viewing gallery artworks, compared to the 2024 students who are studying Australian Landscape Impressionism. This year, they are utilizing VR headsets to participate in a Bob Ross landscape tutorial, which serves as inspiration for creating their own landscape paintings during class.

School TV - Having the Alcohol Discussion

Talking to your teenager about alcohol consumption and the potential dangers associated with it can be tricky and overwhelming. However, no matter how difficult this conversation may be, it is an important one to have in order to ensure the safety of our young people.

The legal drinking age in all Australian states and territories is 18 years, however this does not deter some adolescents from experimenting with alcohol. Health experts say that young people are at greater risk of alcohol-related harm than adults as it increases the risk of damage to their developing brain. It is a substance that affects their body, behaviour and decision-making abilities, highlighting the importance of preventing or limiting your teenager’s alcohol use.

End of school and the impending festive season may be a cause for celebration for many teenagers ready to party and wanting to put this year behind them. However, the impact of the pandemic has experts concerned that these celebrations may involve excessive alcohol consumption and result in risky behaviour. Parent and carers can help minimise these risks by influencing sensible drinking habits. It is important to outline the rules and boundaries around age-appropriate alcohol consumption and what the legal implications may be. Although many teenagers are fully aware of the dangers, they put more value on the reward than adults.

Start the conversation today. Parents and carers need to educate their children on when, where and how to drink responsibly.

If you require further guidance or information, contact the Alcohol and Drug Foundation Helpline on 1300 85 85 84 for free confidential support.
