Kardinia eNews - Wednesday 11 September 2024

From the Principal

This morning, I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying eight members of our International Council to the Global Student Voice Forum final presentation in Melbourne.

This group of students, along with our International Council members, admirably supported by Ms Sophie Armes and Ms Yuting Zhao, have undertaken several projects to promote and encourage international mindedness within the College this year.

As a cornerstone of the College values, this is especially important to our College, and all that we stand for. The students were proud ambassadors for our College, and their presentation showed how much they valued being able to have a voice in creating opportunities for inclusion and celebration of the richness of cultures here at Kardinia.

From the Acting Head of Junior School

Dear JS families,

Action, the core of student agency, is integral to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) learning process and to the programme’s overarching outcome of international-mindedness. Action might come in the form of participation, advocacy, social justice, social entrepreneurship or life choices. This weeks JS enews features several examples of action in the JS. If you see any of these students, please congratulate them, if you know of others that have taken action recently, please give them some encouragement. It is such a wonderful element of our program.

1LB student Ana (Participation & Advocacy)

Congratulations to Ana who has taken it upon herself to tackle doing 10,000 steps a day for the entire month. So far, she has raised $609 to help people with cerebral palsy which is just amazing. If you would like to support Ana’s action, please click on the link below.

KICS Got Talent (Lifestyle choices)

‘Kardinia’s Got Talent’ was a huge success with a growing number of students attending, despite the weather turmoil on Monday. The Performing Arts Committee were the judges across the three days.

Their final results;

A String Trio from Year Four (Elise W, Ryan Z and Nathan Y), playing ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons took out First Place.

A group of Year 5 students performing a choregraphed and well-rehearsed song took out Second Place.

Gus W and Jamie G from Year Six took out Third Place with a very clever and fluent conversation in Japanese.

It was wonderful to see so many students choosing to participate.

Red Nose Day (Participation)

Thanks so much to our Student Action Committee for organising last weeks fundraiser. This event raise $540 and also provided us with allot of fun throughout the day.

Victorian Interschools SnowSport Championships 2024 (Life choices)

Austin (3SW), Ryder (3MG) and Kayla (5SP) proudly represented our Junior School in the 2024 Victorian Championships. They competed and carried the Kardinia International College banner alongside schools from all over Victoria in the opening ceremony.

They were fortunate enough to start the competition with a sunny day, and did not flinch when the wind, rain and poor visibility set in. All three supported each other and demonstrated great sportsmanship in encouraging fellow schools, bringing team spirit, cheering and laughing together.

They are commended for their efforts and their demonstrated leadership in representing our school.

KIC Connect organising our Team Colours Breakfast (Participation)

Thanks so much to our KIC Connect group and parents that have volunteered to support the community event on our last day of term. This community building event also raises gathers donations for Our Village (formally known as Geelong Mums). If you have items to contribute, please drop them at the JS office, or bring them along to breakfast and pop them into the collection buckets.

Year 6 students persuasive writing (Advocacy)

Please enjoy reading the persuasive letter our year 6 students have developed as part of their PYP Exhibition.

Dear Parents and Staff,

As part of the Action for our PYP Exhibition inquiry, we would like to inform you all why we should make the better switch for our planet and change to electric cars, as well as switching to various forms of renewable energy. We hope this letter convinces you to make the change toward a greener planet.

Cars are used daily, whether you are driving kids to school, going to the shops or driving to work. This can cause a lot of pollution that is released into the atmosphere and makes the air we breathe worse, causes Global Warming and affects the wildlife in our world.

A few reasons why it would be great to switch to an electric car is because electric cars are super clean, quiet and smooth while driving. Electric cars have become more popular, and sales have grown across Australia in recent years. Look around and you will notice plenty of EVs on the road and more charging stations popping up at shopping centres, carparks, rest stops and holiday resorts. This makes the daily use of electric cars a lot easier and cheaper to use and run.

Renewable energy sources such as wind power and solar power are super quiet, clean and much better for the environment. Sources like solar and wind can produce energy at a cheaper rate for the duration of the panel or turbine’s life.

If our planet were able to make this switch, we would see a massive decrease in fossil fuel pollution. Our future generations will have a better path towards the future and a more sustainable world to live in.

In conclusion, we believe that electric cars should be the only option to save our planet from fossil fuel pollution. Additionally, there should be more renewable energy being used around the world to leave a longer lasting better impact on our planet.

Please consider our ideas and think how you can make a better choice for our future generations.

Kardinia International College has taken out bronze in the 4x 800 metre men's u20 relay at the Victorian All-Schools Track Relay Championships held last Wednesday 4 September at Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne.

Year 12 students Oliver B, Charles L and James L, together with year 11 student Angus B, earned their place on the podium in a tightly fought contest with a respectable time of 8.01:22.

The team came just behind Wesley College and Scotch College in a field of 11 teams drawn from the fastest track athletes from public and private schools across the state.

Full race results can be found here: https://athsvic.resultshub.com.au/#

GISSA Badminton

Last Thursday (5 September) we played at the inaugural GISSA Badminton competition. We took a team of 9 (Aarav, Issac, Isabel, Akash, J.J, Fin, Josh, Jesse, and Simran) and we faced St Ignatius College, Iona College, Geelong Lutheren College and Clonard College.

All round robin matches were doubles and we made finals undefeated. We played off against St. Ignatius for the top spot, where finals was decided with doubles played to 21, then all players played their matching opponent to 15 in singles. With some of these matches coming down to the wire, we managed to come out on top undefeated for the day! 204 points verses 117 points.

Thanks again to the team for their dedication during training and competing on the day, in particular the 3 year 12's (Aarav, Issac, and J.J) for taking time out of their busy schedule to play for KIC, creating an exciting and engaging small badminton team during lunchtime trainings and cheering on teammates for the day. MVP for the day was Isabel F (year 9), who made a big step competing against some year 12's and still coming out undefeated, Congratulations Isabel!

A big thank you to Mr Waight at GISSA for organising the inaugural competition, it was great to see all the schools coming together having fun and playing at the end of the day; and finally, Sidney and Mr Van Wyk giving us the space to train during lunchtimes and equipment to build our team leading up to the competition.

Students representing Kardinia in Non-College Events

There are many activities that our students do outside of the College with the support of their families.  Whilst the College is not involved in these activities, we still love to share the amazing things that our students get involved in and help celebrate their achievements.  We appreciate the time, dedication and effort required and the benefits it brings to the development of our students.  There are sometimes opportunities where students can represent the College in an activity or at a level that the College cannot support.  A formal process has now been developed that is aimed to improve how we manage expectations, improve related safety aspects plus increasing the visibility of student achievement outside the College.  If you or your child would like to represent the College in an event beyond the College’s scope, we ask that you seek the approval of the College.  In the first instance please contact either our Head of Sport (Senior School) Damian Van Wyk d.vanwyk@kardinia.vic.edu.au, Head of Sport (Junior School) Scott Russell s.Russell@kardinia.vic.edu.au, or the Co-Curricular Co-ordinator Nicole Holton n.holton01@kardinia.vic.edu.au to begin this process.

Social Justice Committee - ASRC Food Drive

We are Year 11 students who are a part of the Social Justice Committee. We decided to run a food drive with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) organisation because we wanted to help make a tangible difference in addressing food insecurity within our community. The ASRC Foodbank provides food and necessities in a comfortable and safe setting to individuals who are seeking asylum.

In a span of 3 weeks, we collected just over 250 kilograms of food, including milk, canned food and other important needs. Thank you to all the staff, students and community for all the support in helping us reach this outcome. We hope to create a difference in the lives of both adults and children and wish to continue this in the upcoming years. Rameesha (Y11)

The Careers Podcast is an exciting student led initiative of the Careers Team at Kardinia International College which aims to give students an opportunity to listen to representatives from many careers and jobs discussing the details of how they got to their current position in life. It will give our students a fun means to hear from and learn about many different jobs and how to get them.

In addition to the details of study pathways, how effective they were as students and other important milestones and influences, the subjects will bring into the conversations their musical experiences, their favourite styles of music and how these may have impacted them and their lives at significant junctions.
By archiving each episode, it will give students and parents the opportunity to revisit each episode to gain valuable insights and to foster discussion into the future.

Amongst the recently donated items for the Morongo Collection was a historic image capturing Morongo students during a Home Economics class. However, the room is yet to be identified. If you know the location of the room, we would love to hear from you!

Later classes were held in the Food Technology Rooms currently used by Kardinia students, with the addition of Thermomixers, microwave ovens and other newer kitchen implements to assist with food preparation and safe food hygiene and handling practises.

Tomorrow is R U Ok? Day …. More specifically it’s R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.

A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week.  Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.

By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.

So, whilst R U Ok? Any Day on Thursday September 12 is our National Day of Action, we encourage you to Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life.

We’ll share more information with students tomorrow but wanted to give families a heads up about a few things happening including ‘R U Ok? Any Day’ yellow themed food at Centrepoint, some great resources to help us all be in a better position to check in on our mates, fellow students, family and other people in our lives.

And tomorrow, we look forward to the Inaugural R U Ok? Any Day Great Duck Search of 2024! But students need to make sure you read the Daily Bulletin in morning for that….

And we encourage students to wear a touch of yellow!

School TV - R U Ok Day

The rise of mental health concerns among young people, including anxiety, depression, and self-harm, is a pressing issue amplified by factors such as academic stress, social media, family dynamics and societal expectations. It is therefore crucial to prioritise early intervention, de-stigmatise mental health discussions, and provide accessible and effective support to address these concerns and promote the wellbeing of young people.

This year R U OK? Day falls on Thursday 12 September, an annual National Day of Action and a reminder that every day is the day to check in with your friends, family and colleagues.

R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention year-round by urging people to invest time in personal relationships and empowering informal support networks to identify signs of distress. Families are encouraged to engage in this initiative, emphasising the importance of authentic human connections and reminding everyone to ask the essential question, "Are you OK?"

Parents, caregivers and schools all play a vital role in shaping young lives. Participating in R U OK? Day goes beyond classrooms, showcasing a commitment to holistic student development. By initiating conversations about mental health, schools create safe spaces, where children feel valued, understood, and supported. Parents can help by fostering an open dialogue, normalising emotions, identifying support systems, teaching active listening and addressing any stigmas relating to mental health.

Many schools nationwide organise events for the R U OK? message, offering students opportunities to engage. Parents and caregivers can help by supporting their school in this endeavour or choose to organise your own event for your workplace or community group. Participating in R U OK? Day nurtures compassion and demonstrates our dedication to the wellbeing of the whole school community, reaffirming that together, we can make a difference!
